A wise proverb once said that civility means being tolerant of others, that compassion takes understanding, and that love is not seeing people as an “other.” At Acacia Creek, a Certified Center for Successful Aging, and retirement community, residents and staff focus on achieving optimal health by growing the whole person – intellectually, socially, physically, and spiritually. Sharing acts of kindness touches upon all four of these successful aging components, benefitting both the body and mind.
Spreading love and acceptance means making a genuine effort to show kindness to others. Even then, acts of kindness don’t require an extraordinary effort on our part. Simple gestures can make a big impact on our friends, neighbors, colleagues, and people in our community.
Here are some ideas for small ways to spread kindness to others:
- Share a smile with a stranger.
- Ask someone who’s struggling if you can help with a heavy bag.
- Hold the door open for the person after you.
- Let another car merge in front of yours.
- Clean up a mess that’s not yours.
- Ask a clarifying question if someone has said or done something to upset you.
- Offer to help.
- Say ‘thank you.’
- Let small annoyances slide.
When we practice small acts of kindness, we are creating more civility, compassion, and love, and it all starts with you.
