When We Believe, We Can Achieve

The word “possible” is defined as “able to be done; within the power or capacity of someone or something.” To believe in our individual possibilities means that we believe in our power and capacity to learn or do something new. Conversely, when we decide that there is nothing we can do – no possibilities – we become stuck. We create barriers that stop us from growing, changing, and improving.

Many of us live with circumstances that physically limit us. How we choose to manage these limitations is important. By focusing only on limitations – what we believe we cannot do – we give up our control and create roadblocks to possibilities. But, when we keep an open mind and work to change our perspective, we break down roadblocks, allowing ourselves to discover what is possible.

At Acacia Creek, a Certified Center for Successful Aging, and retirement community, residents and staff focus on achieving optimal health by growing the whole person – intellectually, socially, physically, and spiritually. Practicing optimism touches upon all four of these successful aging components, benefitting both the body and mind. The best way to shift your mentality towards embracing possibilities is by setting small, achievable goals, and having the dedication and determination to work toward these goals every day. For example, rather than focusing on something you cannot physically achieve at the moment – like running a marathon – focus on something you can achieve, like taking a walk around the block or participating in a Sit & Be Fit class.

Today when you catch myself saying “no” to a suggestion, ask yourself why is “no” truly the right response for me, or am I just afraid of trying something new? Often it’s the latter. Allow yourself to be open to new things by saying, “Yes, I can!” Believing in yourself will open yourself up to many new opportunities that you could have never imagined yourself to be capable of.
