Meeting the Challenges of Solo Aging
EVENT LOCATION
Acacia Creek Retirement Community
34400 Mission Blvd.
Union City, CA 94587
On Wednesday, February 21, from 2–4 p.m., Acacia Creek Retirement Community will host a free presentation on “Solo Aging” led by Dr. Sara Zeff Geber, certified retirement coach and author of Essential Retirement Planning for Solo Agers, selected as the best book on aging well by the Wall Street Journal.
For the past ten years, Dr. Geber, a Bay Area native, has been raising awareness about the necessity to prepare and plan for a Solo Aging lifestyle. She has contributed to various publications on topics of aging and retirement, from Forbes and New York Times and is involved with many organizations such as American Society on Aging and Nexus Insights, a think tank for revolutionary concepts on senior living.
With her progressive ideas about building communities and housing for older adults, Acacia Creek invited Dr. Geber to speak to the community and share her revolutionary concepts in senior living and aging. In this short Q&A, we learn more about Dr. Sara Zeff Geber and what she’ll discuss in her upcoming presentation.
For those who aren’t familiar with the term, what is solo aging?
It refers to people who are living their lives without the benefit and support of nearby adult children or family members to help them when they need it. Basically, anyone who believes that they will be aging alone, those who don’t have a support system nearby.
What inspired you to speak about Solo Aging?
I noticed that many of my friends and colleagues would mention taking care of their parents who were in their late 80s or 90s. They would make sure they were comfortable, had adequate food in the house, were up to date with their meds, etc. I don’t have children of my own and many of my friends and colleagues don’t either so I wondered, who’s going to do all that for us? No one was really talking about it so I started researching the topic of what solo agers should be doing to prepare for the rest of their life. Eventually, I wrote a book on it.
What do you think is the most overlooked challenge for solo agers?
I like to think of it as a three-legged stool. The first leg is your legal homework: your power of attorney and your healthcare directive. The second leg involves your finances: making sure you have enough money to fund the rest of your life, so a financial advisor is very beneficial. The last leg is putting together a social support network.
