Living Better Together

Living in a successful aging community has many benefits. While no more cooking, yard work, home maintenance, or to-do lists are all great pluses, a warm and friendly atmosphere filled with numerous opportunities to socialize and connect with others is perhaps the best benefit of all. In addition to socialization being enjoyable, spending time around others can improve overall health.

At Acacia Creek, a Masterpiece Living Certified Center for Successful Aging, and retirement community, we believe that socializing is an important part of all wellness categories – intellectual, social, physical, and purposeful. According to experts, participating in conversations and shared activities may be a major contributor to longevity. A 2009 study by the American Academy of Neurology found that people who shared their problems experienced less stress and had lower blood pressure.

Social networks also provide a source of stimulation, challenging participants in social interactions and helping prevent memory decline. Socialization has been shown to result in a stronger immunity, especially for older adults. Interacting with others may help fight off colds, the flu, and perhaps even some types of cancer. It increases feelings of well-being and decreases depression.

It’s almost impossible to be lonely Acacia Creek! There are so many events and activities that provide opportunities to socialize with interesting, fun-loving individuals. The next time you feel guilty about meeting with friends rather than getting to your “to do” list, remember that being social is a good choice, too. You are prioritizing your health and investing in a healthier, happier life.
